Thanks for your quick response. I don't know whether this is a cosmetic problem, as the one install I attempted with the 1/3/5 partition layout failed (grub error 18 upon reboot at the end of what up until that point looked like a successful install), but several other things also differed between it and the subsequent successful install.
Further tests would be needed to see whether the skipped partition is lost, or whether it can still be used during the install. So in other words: - create primary partition (this would be hda1) - create logical partition (hda5) - create primary partition (hda3) - create primary partition (which partition number is allocated here?) - create primary partition (does this fail?)
