Morten, is this the same "Wuff, Wuff" problem, which shows ^@ chars inside cat?
If so, the way to fix this is to turn off any "autodetection" settings for what backspace should send, and explicitly specify the code it should send (probably, ^?). You could also download the latest sources for screen via the git repository at Savannah, as we've fixed this on our end as well as submitting the vte patch.
