Same issue for me. I can install nvidia's 173.14.15 (from ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/173.14.15/) without a hitch and it runs fine. Is this just a matter of building the Ubuntu package using 173.14.15 instead of 173.14.12? Unfortunately, none of the newer drivers (including 177) are compatible with my on-board GPU.
