Compiz did not produce the error that I have above before installing the new driver however the older driver had various problems of its own which prompted me to try the new one. So far the shifted screen is the only problem that compiz has under the new driver. But after performing the (Ctrl-Alt-...) combination as described above the screen refreshes and looks normal and compiz operates as expected.
