Ubuntu Version: 8.10 x64 w/ Proposed Updates

With a clean install of Ubuntu 8.10, the Function (Fn) buttons on my
laptop (an HP dv6565us ) work for triggering brightness increase and
decrease (Fn + F7/F8).  Once updates are installed (through ubuntu-
proposed) the brightness controls do not work.  Also the power manager
does not seem to have an effect.

Xev reports this on Fn + F7 (brightness decrease):
KeymapNotify event, serial 59, synthetic NO, window 0x0,
    keys:  1   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   
           0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0   0  
(similar for Fn + F8)

This is a particularly vexing issue as it significantly reduces battery
life and seems to be a regression.

I would like to help, so please let me know what I can do.
