I have the same problem on my Dell E6500 notebook. I have to crank the volume 
up to +90% to have something usable out of the headphone connector. I have 
tried the model=ref parameter but it does not make a difference.

I have this problem too, and still have on xubuntu-8.10.
My motherboard is Intel-DG45ID, the sound output/analog is very low volume.
Anyone know how to fix it?
I attached the lspci -v output and dmesg output.
Please help.
