Additional: I spent a few days of copying a selection of files to
various usb ide/sata interfaces.

Both the controllers are ide with a ide > sata adapter attached, That
are the ones producing the the log entries and problems for me. The
usbhd cases are from different companies one unbranded the other is
branded safecom model# su2sj-35caf 2006 they both report themselves (via
lsusb) as:

Device 018: ID 067b:2507 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2507 Hi-speed USB
to IDE bridge controller

They did not produce any errors or seem to have any problems until
recently when a tgz backup file failed copying to one of the devices.

After loads of testing the PL2507 can copy some files with out a problem
and others just produce an occasional random reset (sometimes without
one) with no apparent affect. They seem to work best using the 8.1 live
cd but the problems still occur, not enough to always be noticeable.
After install and update to latest kernel -9 in 8.1 it seems to get much
worse.

I have tried both small & large files, it is normally the larger files
that have more of a problem. 50mb+.

I found one large 12gb sony dv camera avi file that errors every single
time, at different positions what ever kernel version 7.1, 8.04LTS and
8.1 when copying to both of the PL2507 devices. The AVI file copies
normally on other controllers with the same HD

The file attached contains the pl2507 chip markings, lsusb - v and log
entries when copying a file to drive.
