I finally figured out how the input hotplug stuff works. So I disabled it ("AutoAddDevices" "false") and tried the old mouse driver. No difference.
So I'm pretty sure this is not a bug in evdev or mouse, as both drivers display the bug. So everything points now to the kernel.
