Hello, I can confirm this problem on Acer Extensa 3000 (nearly identical with Travelmate 4500 posted above).
I tried a workaround suggested at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=987699 but I don't think alsa is the problem here. Unloading snd_hda_intel doesn't help either.
