After further usage, the nvidia-settings workaround makes other things worse, such as causing my Cairo Dock to crawl when trying to access it, which boosts CPU usage up to 100%. It also resets upon restarting my computer, so the settings would have to somehow be made permanent. Maybe it won't affect other people's CPUs, though.
