To Mikael: I tried vesa already and it seems to loose sync. If you want any logs of what happens in that specific situation, please let me know and I can generate some. As you mentioned, the vesa driver is not gonna cut it performance-wise for me I am afraid :-(
To Geir: I attached (yes, quick learner ;-)) the lspci command you mentioned. I seem not to have anything resembling /var/log/xorg.conf I am afraid.
