Public bug reported: Binary package hint: displayconfig-gtk
Ubuntu Release: Hardy Heron When testing a X configuration via the Test button fails, the program does give to the GUI only a short message: "Configuration test failed" "Please verify the selected devices and configuration." More detailed error information is written to the console, but this is invisible to the user when displayconfig-gtk is launched automatically when the normal X startup fails at system startup. This happened to me when i was changing graphics card from AGP to PCIe, and back again. On putting my AGP card back in, i forgot to plug in a power connector to the card. The nvidia driver wasn't working, and i was stuck with xorg.conf.failsafe and vesa driver. I eventually launched displayconfig-gtk manually from console, and got this helpful message on stdout: Sorry, this configuration video card driver and monitor doesn't appear to work: Messages from the X server: (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Your GeForce 7600 GS graphics card does not have the necessary (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): external power cables attached; X will not start unless (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): this is rectified. Please shut down your computer, open (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): its case, and attach the appropriate power connectors. (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Your video card may have multiple power connectors. If (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): so, each must be attached to a separate power cable. (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Please see the documentation provided with your video card (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): for more details. If you think you have received this (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): message in error, you may specify the (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): "NoPowerConnectorCheck" X configuration option in the (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Screen section of your X config file. (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: I read somewhere that displayconfig-gtk will be gone in next ubuntu release? Is this true? If so, it would be waste of time to change the prog now. But i think it might be easiely improvable by changing the on_button_test_config_clicked function in DisplayConfig.py to include the "msg" in the text of the displayed Messagebox. ** Affects: displayconfig-gtk (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- displayconfig-gtk does not give detailed error message to GUI user https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/313788 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
