Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: displayconfig-gtk

Ubuntu Release: Hardy Heron

When testing a X configuration via the Test button fails, the program
does give to the GUI only a short message:
"Configuration test failed"
"Please verify the selected devices and configuration."

More detailed error information is written to the console, but this is
invisible to the user when displayconfig-gtk is launched automatically
when the normal X startup fails at system startup.

This happened to me when i was changing graphics card from AGP to PCIe, and
back again.
On putting my AGP card back in, i forgot to plug in a power connector to the
card.
The nvidia driver wasn't working, and i was stuck with xorg.conf.failsafe and
vesa driver.

I eventually launched displayconfig-gtk manually from console, and got this
helpful message on stdout:
Sorry, this configuration video card driver
and monitor doesn't appear to work:

Fatal server error:

I read somewhere that displayconfig-gtk will be gone in next ubuntu release?
Is this true? If so, it would be waste of time to change the prog now.

But i think it might be easiely improvable by changing the
on_button_test_config_clicked
function in DisplayConfig.py to include the "msg" in the text of the displayed
Messagebox.
