This might be a problem with the automatic ACLs which hal sets, since
hal does not otherwise meddle with sound devices. First, please give me
the output of "id" for your user. Are you in the "audio" group?
Please give me the output of "getfacl /dev/snd/*" and "sudo fuser -v
/dev/snd/*" while hal is running, and after you stopped it. Are the
devices inaccessible while hal is running?
