I have a similar issue, when any window is fullscreen, I can alt-tab, but as soon as I tab back to the full screen window X/Compiz appears to lock up. I am able to get control again after switching to tty1 and then back. I have noticed this behavior with Mplayer, VLC and Firefox all when in fullscreen mode. This bug disappears when Compiz is disabled and returns with Compiz.
I've also narrowed it down to the "Application Switcher" and "Static Application Switcher" plugins. The bug does not occur with "Ring Switcher" or "Shift Switcher". My computer is running Ubuntu 8.10 and is up to date. Running on a Core 2 Duo E6420 and GeForce 8800 GTS, using Nvidia driver version 177.
