Same issue on a Toshiba Portege M600 that has an intel video card (GMX
4600, but it does not seem to be the issue at all) on Intrepid with all
updates as of today.

Here are the brightness files after a boot :

cat /proc/acpi/video/*/*/brightness
<not supported>
<not supported>
<not supported>
levels:  100 42 0 14 28 42 56 70 84 100
current: 100
<not supported>

But the level should actually be 0 (display is dimmed). I also attach
the gnome bug report file.
