Same happens here on Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 with: Compiz + Gnome + FF 3.0.5 with or without Emerald.
I suspect all workaround are somehow crappy, as they have side effects. On of these workaround will not allow to properly see flash movies (maybe in full screen), other workaround don't work at all, other that I found in Internet looks more like wizardry and make no sens at all. Taipan: I would suggest to suspend your account here. The reason would be: demonstrated and full-blown idiocy.
