I have bypassed the problem for Gnome applications by reverting to OSS. For me, Pulse and ALSA simply crackle and ESD fails completely. The Phonon/Xine backend works fine in the K environment. My main concern is that flash 10 exclusively supports Pulse, so until we can get a permanent fix, flash will be audio-less.
The codec for my chipset is listed as: Realtek ALC888 I just finished installing and completely updating Kubuntu and Ubuntu minutes before adding this comment.
