Same problem here. This is kubuntu 8.10. The problem occurs only with networking folders (smb in my case). The bug concerns every file opened with OpenOffice (being .ods or .xls). Furthermore, the "Open File" dialog in OpenOffice (kdefilepicker) doesn't give access to "Network" with saved network shares. Okular or Dragon player does.
This renders kubuntu 8.10 unusable in network share environnement (enterprise). It does not seems to happen in ubuntu (gnome). Perhaps this bug is linked with bug Bug #73676 which is the duplicate of Bug #102297. I doesn't have the time to make further research, but the bug is reproductible and I can test a solution if someone finds it.
