I could be mistaken, but I think it's even simpler than that, with no
source or recompiling necessary.  Just add that block of XML to the
appropriate <country> element in /usr/share/mobile-broadband-provider-
info/serviceproviders.xml

  </provider>

Incidentally, it appears that Verizon Wireless doesn't actually require
authentication, as the Auto Mobile Broadband (CDMA) connection option
(should be shown by left-clicking the nm-applet icon) appears to work
just fine for EvDO.
