I'm running Kubuntu Edgy. There are no error messages, other than
KPowersave under the brightness settings tab simply giving the
grammatically broken phrase, "Your hardware currently not support
changing the brightness of your display." If you want more hardware
information you're going to have to be more specific about what you
want, I've already indicated it's an Inspiron 8000  and the video card
driver being used, Rage128. More specifically it's a Rage 128 Mobility
M4 32, but all Rage128's use the same xorg driver so I'm not sure if
that helps.

If you tell me what to type into the command line and copy and paste
here I can do that.
