Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better, but unfortunately I've been unable to duplicate your
issue. I too noticed some problems with the NVIDIA 177 drivers, and
followed the exact same process you did, however it did disable it for
me. I then repeated the process and switched from the 177 drivers to
the 173 drivers, which has not only worked but also given better
performance. This was all done on a Dell XPS M1730 laptop with a nVidia
Corporation GeForce 8800M GTX.
