While booting from the livecd I went to F6 other options and then on the boot line I took out the end of the line which was "quiet splash --". It still booted to a black screen but I did notice it was about 3 lines after GDM loaded. I did go back and try most of the other options and it booted with F4 safe graphics mode. I have it installed now so all is well, but I never had to use F4 safe graphics before?
