Upgraded to 8.10 and the problem has disappeared. During the upgrade process I was asked if I wanted to replace 2 cupsys conf files, which I did. These conf files had never been altered by me previously (from a clean hardy install), so I assume they may have been altered by a patch on hardy and subsequently created the problem.
