Some people like alt and some like control. Personally for a new tab I just right-click to open in new tab OR double click the tab bar to open a new blank tab.
I don't see how this is a bug that necessarily needs fixed as each browser has different shortcuts and options, so saying Opera only has one shortcut for 'open in new tab' does not mean that firefox should only have one. I do see this bug report is old and still open...
