Reproducing the problem: I used ubuntu-8.04.1-alternate-amd64.iso hardy 8.04 LTS. Note that the Live CD has a different user interface and the reported issues do not apply. I also tested with Intrepid 8.10. I was able to reproduce some of the claims mentioned above. I found that are 3 steps leading to the configuration of the locale and the timezone: 1- The user is prompted to choose from an exhaustive list the language of the installation. The installer cannot make an educated guess to present a smaller list.
2- The installer then makes an educated guess as to where the user may reside based on the chosen language. This is done to present the user with a smaller list rather than the long list of all countries in the world. There is also a last choice "Other" which permits the user to select any other country in the world. 3- The installer then makes an assumption. The timezone the user wants is the timezone of where the computer is installed. The installer only knows in which country the computer is installed which can yield multiple timezones. This is where the installer completes the dialog with the user by providing a list of timezones that are valid for the country in question. There is no "Other" choice where a user would, for example, select a GMT(0) timezone. Test case to illustrate the issue using the English language: >From the installer main menu select "Choose a language" >From the first "Choose a language" menu select "English" >From the second "Choose a language" menu select "United States" Proceed with the few unrelated installation steps In the "Configure the clock" menu, note that you have 9 choices only for the timezone which limits the user. You cannot set the timezone to GMT(0) for example as it is required for international servers. ** Changed in: debian-installer (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- instalation localization and timezone is crazy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/18928 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
