I Had the same problem on a Inspiron 8000.  I found this google link
which fixed the problem:

Essentially you need to modify the xorg.conf file to get a workable
video for X server.

These instructions are not for the faint heart (those people who have
never seen a command prompt in their lives).  I'm glad I was a Dell Unix
support person in a former life!
