I will withdraw this report. As I made clear in the original report, I could not install Gutsy Gibbon from CD on this machine. This was the failure that was not understood.
Now over a year later, I have done complete install from CD, of 8.10 Intrepid Ibex. However, before I did so, I had found bad blocks on the system partition, and mapped them out with mke2fs -c. So now, I cannot rule out that there were bad block problems with that first installation, and indeed, since such weird behaviour could be expected in a system installation on top of bad blocks, I have to suspect that this was the cause of the original problem. You might consider putting the possibility of bad blocks, and how to check for them, in a troubleshooting page for system installations. In fact, it might be good to somehow put this check into the installer itself (I think I've seen such things in other installers). Cheers!
