I'm using 8.10 I had xrdp installed for some time, and then installed tightvncserver as you suggested, and the restarted. When I tried to connect from a vista computer on my local network, it almost worked the first time. I got the X shaped mouse and the black and white pixel background. But it failed. I'm not sure what the error was, but I noticed that if I tried to connect again without rebooting, it would just fail oughtright.
