I have increased the memory to 2+2 GB sometime ago and I have no problems for running out of memory. My actual problems with the kernel (2.6.27.10.13) are that I have no sound and my vega camera web doesn't work.
With Synaptic I have some problems, sometimes the cache is corrupted but then I used aptitude and the problem is solved by this one. I continue without swap.
