Downloaded the final release of Xubuntu Intrepid_Ibex 8.10 (http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/intrepid/release/xubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso) dated 30-Oct-2008 01:17 Ran cd-integrity check; passed Selected 2nd option - Install Xubuntu Step 1 of 7; Choose a language -> English -> Forward Step 2 of 7; Where are you? -> Boise -> Forward Step 3 of 7; Keyboard layout -> USA; USA - Alternative international (former us_intl) -> Forward Step 4 of 7; Prepare disk space -> Manual -> Forward Prepare partitions -> /dev/sdb1 -> Edit partition Edit a partition -> New partition size in megabytes: (was 9524); reduce to 6144 Use as: Ext3 journaling file system Format the partition: checkmark Mount point: / -> OK Before you can continue, any previous changes have to be written to the disk -> Continue clicking on the partition before the partition editor is finished formatting results in another window opening: "Please wait..." -> partition was not changed selected Edit partition again; Scanning disks...; Edit a partition opens; input same data again; -> OK Window is frozen at this point; I can click on both Cancel and OK buttons; there is no action taken Switch to Ctrl+Alt+F2; top shows Ubiquity still working; Alt+F7 shows no action; GUI is unresponsive; Ctrl-C , Ctrl-X , Ctrl+Alt+Del get no response. I was able to enter "shutdown -r now" in TTY2 to restart the system, but only because of prior experience and knowledge.
