Check your /etc/environment file ($ sudo gedit /etc/environment) and
make sure that JAVA is in there, both in your regular area and in your
PATH info.

For example, here is my /etc/environment file:

JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.07/
PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.07/bin/"
LANGUAGE="en_US:en"
LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
# end

... at least, when I was struggling with the hanging problem similar to
yours (it would open on a blank white screen and just HANG), it didn't
fix until I did that.
