I am using Dell Inspiron 6000, I starting to get this exact issue after upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10. Additional to this, I notice the screen brightness sometimes automatically increases on its own. And my keyboard input get disabled once I try to reduce the brightness. The workaround I usually do to get it back to normal is: 1) Press [Alt] + [Ctrl] + F1 2) Followed by [Alt] + [Ctrl] + F7
