Same problem for me; I have 8.10 with an Intel 3945abg card (iwl3945 driver) in an HP laptop. If I run "sudo iwlist scan" network manager wakes up afrter a few seconds. Note that I need to run it with sudo, otherwise as a non-root user the wireless card won't do a channel-hopping scan, so it won't find all the networks. Thanks!
