The same problem here. I have the same motherboard (M2A-VM HDMI - ATI X1250 Integrated video) and I get a black screen at the end of the splash presentation in Kubuntu Desktop 8.10 64b Final.
*** Curiosity: I had the same problem that happened to Sander with Kubuntu 8.04. In the first attempts booting did not passed the splash screen.. Then, in following days everything worked well. I do not understand what is happening.
