Thanks. I'm glad to get the package manager running again. And it turned out not to be a security thing after all. Actually, I didn't mess up the rest of that source file. Inelegant as it is, that's what installs in Intrepid by default.
the only problem still is that the packages I've downloaded won't install. I went the Medibuntu route after downloading the ubuntu package from skype didn't work, nor did opera. Both supposedly failed because my PC haas the wrong architecture. I have a dual core intel chip, so I had downloaded the 386 architecture. Same with the w32 and libdev2 packages downloaded from medibuntu. I'm surprized and somewhat comfused.
