Another couple of data points... I have the problem with two of my machines. One with ICH6 and another with an internal Audigy 2. Same thing. Sound works fine when I first boot up, then stops working completely at some point.
Following the advice above, I've checked alsamixer to make sure sliders are up and outputs unmuted. No go. I also have the latest version of alsa-oss installed, according to apt-get install.
