I'm also experiencing this bug. Even before the login screen appears, I'm getting the same message as the original reporter. (In german though.) A rough translation is: An error occured loading the theme Human. The image "/usr/share/gdm/themes/Human/background.png" could not be loaded. Error reading the PNG file:IDAT:CRC Error
The weird thing is, that this occured in my previously installation of Ubuntu 8.04 which I upgraded to 8.10.
