it would seem that during the update as mentioned above, I did something wrong. A lot of packages that were installed by default had gone awol, ultimately last night I had to do a clean install using 2.6.27-7. Thereafter updated using all available updates except kernel and linux header updates. This worked fine. Finally updated all outstanding kernel updates etc and this seems to have worked okay. It is quite possible that this was not a bug, just an error on my side. thanks.
