Hi: Thanks for your reply. It would appear that recently, upgrades to certain packages (I only remember Amarok and the default gnome icon set) have failed, all complaining that I have too many open files. After I increased the limit by a few orders or magnitude (yes, it was that bad), the upgrades succeeded. So I think you can safely close this bug :)
