Thanks. It appears that the problem is the way I have attached my HD and the CD-ROM. It seems that ubuntu does not recognize more than one device connected via PATA strip. I will change the PATA strip with another then remove all HDs ( I have 3) and just attach the boot HD to see if ubuntu can recognize one CD-ROM and one HD. I'll work it from there. I had WinXP previously and it recognized the set up of 1 CD-ROM and 3 HDD.
