I have tested the newer -ati driver plus newer X server (from your ppa) for a full week, and did not experience a single crash. Right now I cannot revert to the old driver, as I have for the moment switched to Fedora 10. However, on Fedora I haven't experienced such a crash either, using Xserver 1.5.3 and xf86-video-ati 6.9.0-54 (which seems to be the git master from 16/10 with a whole bunch of KMS patches).
I'd want to reinstall Ubuntu for a while on a spare partition, but the problem is I only triggered the bug after working on it for some days.
