Having now used Intrepid for a while I'm guessing that this problem may be either missing/incorrect firmware download or wrong device identification. The device functions correctly under Intrepid, the lsusb device id remains constant between the two releases (1608:021b). There was some (possibly related) kernel 2.6.26 discussion at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=480195 - not sure if this is relevant to the 2.6.24 series as used in Hardy.
