- I moved the cursor after reading a news for about 5 seconds, then the new 
selected news got marked as read.
- Tried it a few more times and it seems to me that thunderbird should remember 
exactly which news the focus was on and not mark the message under the cursor 
shortly after the timer event occurs.
- I didn't test it with e-mail, only with news.
