Ah. I see now. The problem for me then has been that I failed to find the relevant "configure" menu. The reasons for this were:
1. There are two "settings" menu items in a very prominent position (the top of their respective drop-down menus). They are much more prominent than the "configure" submenus and make it harder to notice them. 2. There are three "configure" submenus to choose from. This is very confusing too. This is why I completely failed to notice that the preferences dialogue was in the file-->configure submenu. What I intuitively expected to happen was to find the preferences from the "settings" panel.
