When you boot into ubuntu and decrease the brightness it works fine and the visual popup display the bar decreasing. After the bar is empty you can increase the bright but there's no visual feedback besides the screen getting brighter, when the bright is at maximum the visual bar is still empty. My setup also produces the +- keystrokes as well as increases brightness
