I have the same problem with both OOo 2.4 and 3.0.0 on Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) on a Toshiba Satellite L315, which has a 14'' screen.
Thanks for the tabulator fix, I hadn't thought of that! But it would still be nice to see the buttons, especially for when people first run into this problem. It actually made me late for work today :( (Well, this wouldn't have been a problem in the first place except that OO Writer kept freezing whenever I was trying to save something, then I couldn't figure out how to reopen it.
