I have the same problem, two users on the same machine of which at most 1 can run avant-window-navigator, else the other user, upon fast switching to that account gets the notification: Error: Screen isn't composited. Please run compiz (-fusion) or another compositing manager. Dell Inspiron 9100 with Ati Radeon 9700 running Ubuntu 8.10.
