Public bug reported:

I installed oss-compat to gain the /dev/dsp device, which is required
for audio with VMware. After rebooting, the device is gone. I have
temporarily worked around this by adding:

  dpkg-reconfigure oss-compat

to /etc/rc.local, which reestablishes the environment

Ubuntu jaunty (development branch), Release: 9.04

oss-compat:
  Installed: 0.0.4+nmu1
