By the way has anyone tried this using the newest version (0.9) of mtpfs? I'll also try to build it from source and try if the bug gets fixed that way. Then the solution would be simple enough: update mtpfs from upstream.
I'll also try what Gordon did (deleting files via bash) and see if I get the same problem with the current package version (and also 0.9). In case someone just needs a nice way to use their Zen player and doesn't care about the mounting aspect, you can use gnomad2 which seems to work very nicely with my Zen 8GB.
