** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xfce

this may be a bug in some package related to xfce or to gnome.

every time i log into xfce, nautilus opens itself automatically. After
that, the gnome wallpaper and gnome desktop icons appear instead of the
xfce background, and the xfce menus are not accessible by right-clicking
anymore. Right-clicking brings up the respective gnome menu. The xfce
  panel is still there, though.

This behaviour was first noted when nautilus was opened manually through
  "run program".

This behaviour reappears after logout-login and after reboot.
+
+ This behaviour doesn't appear when I log in as root.
+
+ Trying, as a workaround, to chmod -x nautilus leads to keeping the xfce
+ startup background (not the actual desktop color) and no menus on any
+ mouse buttons.
